The Arable Event, a key gathering for farmers and industry specialists, is set to take place on June 19 at Woodlands Farm, located on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border. Now in its 10th year, the event is anticipated to attract over 1,500 attendees eager to explore new and conventional winter cereal crop trials.
Organised by Wynnstay and GrainLink, the Arable Event will showcase extensive trial plots featuring a diverse range of winter cereals, including wheat, barley, oats, hybrid rye, and triticale. This year’s trials will be larger than ever, incorporating demonstrations of fertilisers and bio-stimulants with contributions from leading manufacturers such as Yara, ICL, LKAB, and Omex, who will be on hand to provide expert advice.
Danny Richardson, combinable seed product specialist at Wynnstay Group Plc, highlighted the importance of these demonstrations, stating, “The Arable Event demonstration trials will enable farmers to find out about the latest varieties of cereal seeds and will give them an opportunity to compare the key varieties in person.”
Among the standout varieties to be showcased are SY Cheer, a newly recommended provisional group one milling wheat; Bamford, a new soft wheat from Elsoms with a strong disease profile; and LG Beowulf, a hard feed wheat from Limagrain. On the barley front, LG Capitol, the only new conventional barley, is set to be a focal point, alongside the hybrid barley SY Buzzard, noted for its tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV).
New entries at the event include Cromwell, a milling oat looking to compete with Mascani, and Lumaco triticale, which is expected to surpass KWS Fido. The increasing importance of bio-stimulants will also be addressed, with demonstrations of several foliar products planned.
The Arable Event promises to be an educational experience, featuring technical seminars led by guest speakers. Notably, Charlie Ireland, a farming consultant and a regular on the popular television show Clarkson’s Farm, will be returning as the keynote speaker. He will be joined by influencer Olly ‘Blogs’ Harrison, who gained a following during the lockdown by sharing insights into farming life via his YouTube channel, which has amassed 118,000 subscribers.
Event manager Kelly Dolphin expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming gathering, stating, “We are looking forward to a fantastic day of learning and networking as visitors find out about the latest developments in agriculture while catching up with farming friends old and new. It’s important for farmers to keep up with everything that’s new in the industry, and where better to do that than the one-stop-shop Arable Event.”
Entry to the Arable Event is free, and attendees are encouraged to register in advance for fast-track tickets, which also enter them into a prize draw sponsored by Mornflake. Additionally, participants can earn BASIS and NroSO points.
The event will run from 9 am to 5 pm and is easily accessible, located near Junction 3 of the M54. For further information and to register for a free ticket, interested parties can visit the Arable Event website.
