The 2024 World Manufacturing Convention will take place from 20 to 23 September at the Hefei Binhu International Convention and Exhibition Center, located by the scenic shores of Chaohu Lake. This prestigious event will draw manufacturing representatives from across the globe, using the platform to promote innovation and collaboration in the sector.
Anhui’s Industrial Transformation
Anhui, historically associated with coal, grain, and steel production, has undergone a major industrial transformation. Once a predominantly agricultural province, Anhui is now positioning itself as a key player in global manufacturing. The shift from an economy driven by energy and raw materials to one that leads in advanced industries, such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, and smart technologies, marks a new chapter in its development. Additionally, emerging fields like the low-altitude economy and quantum information are gaining traction, further enhancing Anhui’s industrial appeal.
The convention will highlight Anhui’s rapid growth and technological advancements, helping to reshape external perceptions of the province. Luo Wenshan, Deputy Director of the Anhui Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, reported that in 2023, Anhui’s industrial revenue reached 5.1 trillion yuan, making it the top performer among central and western regions of China. Furthermore, the province is responsible for producing a significant portion of China’s renewable energy and high-tech products, including one-fifth of the country’s photovoltaic modules, one-seventh of its lithium batteries, and one-eighth of its electric vehicles.
Automotive Industry at the Forefront
One of Anhui’s flagship sectors is the automotive industry, which has developed an extensive supply chain and become integral to the province’s economy. The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has contributed to the rapid growth of Anhui’s automotive sector, enabling the region to form a competitive EV cluster. Notably, the Chery Holding Group, headquartered in Anhui, has held the title of China’s top passenger car exporter for 21 consecutive years, reporting revenues of $39.09 billion in 2024.
In 2023 alone, Anhui produced 2.491 million vehicles, ranking second in the country. The automotive industry contributed 1.15 trillion yuan in revenue, making it one of two trillion-yuan industries in the province, alongside equipment manufacturing.
Low-Altitude Economy and Innovation
Another emerging sector in Anhui is the low-altitude economy, which represents a new wave of productivity. Wuhu, in southern Anhui, has rapidly transformed from a remote area into a thriving aviation hub. The region now hosts nearly 200 companies in the aviation and drone industries, including major players like CETC Diamond Aircraft and United Aircraft. Together, these companies generate an annual output value of 40 billion yuan.
Innovation continues to be the cornerstone of Anhui’s success. The province has established three national research and development centres in advanced materials, intelligent voice technologies, and machinery components, tying with the highest number in the country. These efforts underscore Anhui’s growing reputation as a hub for technological development and industrial innovation.
As the World Manufacturing Convention opens its doors, it aims to not only celebrate the province’s achievements but also signal Anhui’s readiness to lead the charge in shaping the future of global manufacturing.
